The strawberry is a perfect snack for guinea pigs because of all of its vitamins and minerals and its sweet taste.

Can Guinea Pigs Eat Strawberries?

Yes, strawberries are fruits that guinea pigs are allowed to eat. Guinea pigs love to eat all kinds of different fruits, but they especially loved ones that are rich in color and sweet. That would be the strawberry. They’re fond of eating raspberries and blueberries as well.

Most berries, including the strawberry, are perfect snacks for guinea pigs to indulge in once in a while. It would be best if you only gave strawberries to your guinea pigs about once a week. But you should never feed your guinea pig too many fruits. Too much sugar is bad for guinea pigs. If a guinea pig eats a lot of fruit and other sugary foods often, at least more than four times a week or so, they could develop insulin resistance. If their insulin resistance goes untreated for too long, then they can develop full-blown type 2 diabetes. Also, feeding a guinea pig too much fruit will hurt their intestinal tract because they need a lot of fiber in their diet.

Even if your guinea pigs do not develop type 2 diabetes, a lot of fruit in their diet could lead them to gain weight and becoming obese guinea pigs. The fruit has far more calories than hay or grass does, so they need to eat much less of it. The fruit is the human equivalent of having a large piece of cake every day except without all the vitamins and minerals of fruit.

Like humans, guinea pigs can develop dental issues and cavities from a diet with too many sugary foods.

What Is the Right Serving Size for Strawberries?

As we have stated before, make sure you do not feed fruits to your guinea pig too often within a week. You should not feed fruit to your furry little friend more than twice a week, but once a week is even better.

When creating a proper serving of strawberries for your guinea pig, you can leave on the stem and leaves. They may be small compared to the fruit, but they’re still vitamins and minerals inside the leaves. But you have to wash the strawberries before you give them to the guinea pig. Guinea pigs cannot handle many pesticides in their food, and strawberries are one of the harshest pesticide-treated fruits.

Guinea pigs are known as mindless eaters. They will keep eating, no matter how much is in front of them. Because of their eating habits, they are prone to choking. So you will want to cut up the strawberry into small pieces. Only serve them one or two strawberries. Although small, this is the perfect size for a guinea pig.

The Proper Diet for a Guinea Pig

There are three components to a guinea pig’s diet. One is hay, the second is fruits and vegetables, the third is pellets. A guinea pig’s diet should consist of about 80% hay and 20% fruits and vegetables and pellets.

1. Hay

Hay is the main staple of a guinea pig’s diet. They are complete herbivores, and they need a lot of fiber. They need so much hay that their owners just leave a brick of hay in their cage for them to nibble on all day long. When you are shopping for hey, make sure to get a high-quality brand that does not use a lot of pesticides to grow it.

2. Vegetables and Fruits

Vegetables should be the other main stable of a guinea pig’s diet. They should be given a serving of vegetables every day. Many vegetables, like leafy greens or zucchini and cucumber, should be given in serving sizes of 1 cup. But other sweeter vegetables should be given to guinea pigs in only two to three tablespoons.

This is the same for fruits as well. Fruits only need a serving size of 2 to 3 tablespoons. But you do not feed a guinea pig fruits every day. Like the strawberry, they should only be given at most twice a week. You always want to limit the amount of sugar in a guinea pigs’ diet.

3. Pellets

Pellets are the last crucial part of a guinea pig’s diet. Pellets have all the fats and amino acids that they need to maintain a healthy coat and balance their hormones. You can give pellets to them every day but only in serving sizes of one to two tablespoons.

Potassium is essential for the guinea pigs’ circulatory system and urinary system. It is also vital to help flush out their bladder and help their heart pump.

2. Fiber

Although not as much as hey, there is a good amount of fiber in strawberries and the juices within the fruit itself can help improve their digestive tract and make it easier to excrete.
