There are a number of different Betta fish that you’ll have to choose from, so you need to know what your options are.

These fish make for great pets, and each kind is unique its own way. When you learn about these fish, you’ll have no problem choosing the right one for your tank.

Different Types of Betta Fish

1. Crowntail Betta

Crowntail Betta

A lot of people like the Crowntail Betta because of its flamboyant and colorful appearance. The males display a number of vibrant colors, including dark red, blue, purple and black. Females tend to have a lighter coloration as well as a shorter tail.

These fish have a spiked crown that sets them apart from the rest of this species. While they have only been around for less than 30 years, they are still among the most popular pet fish choices in the world.

2. Combtail Betta

The Combtail Betta has a characteristic wide caudal fin that fans out in an extravagant display. While their crown does have a little bit of spiking, it’s not nearly as pronounced as the Crowntail’s. The bright blue and red coloration of this fish makes it a gorgeous addition to pretty much any aquarium.

3. Veiltail Betta

Veiltail Betta

A Veiltail is another good choice for those who want to get a new fish that is beautiful and active. It has a downward facing tail and an almost entirely red body with some traces of white. This is one of the easiest fishes in the world to breed, so you’ll want to keep that in mind as well. Female Veiltails can have vibrant colors like the males, but they aren’t nearly as stunning overall.

4. Plakat Betta

Plakat Betta

The Plakat Betta is known for its stubby tail that has a rounded appearance. One of the things that set these Bettas apart from the others is their extremely short fins. They are, however, very skilled swimmers to say the least.

These fish can be fairly aggressive, especially if they are kept with another male Betta. Even their name means “fighting fish”. You’ll definitely want to be careful about which fish you put in with this one.

The blue, orange, pink and yellow coloration of this fish makes for a great way to make your aquarium more vibrant as a whole.

5. Double Tail Betta

Double Tail Betta

The Double Tail Betta has a truly striking overall appearance with a variety of bright colors that include blue, purple, pink, red, and orange. It has two different tails with a dorsal fin that is massive compared to others of this species. This is by far one of the more visually stunning Bettas in the world.

6. Delta Tail Betta

Delta Tail Betta

The Delta Tail Betta fish has a reputation for its rather large tail that bears a striking similarity to the Greek delta letter. This fish has a tail that is quite narrow at the start and gets wider along the edges. The Super Delta has a particularly impressive look with a tail flare that is very impressive.

7. Rosetail Betta

The Rosetail Betta has a caudal fin that exceeds 180 degrees with a tail that makes it look like an aquatic peacock. It has a mostly black coloration with some red on the underside of its body. There are also sometimes traces of blue, giving it quite an interesting look.

While these fish are definitely not the most active of their species, they are very aesthetically pleasing. You can expect the Rosetail to spend much of its time hiding among the vegetation and crevices in its tank. If you are looking for a fish that is very active and swims around a lot, this one isn’t a particularly good choice.

8. Halfmoon Betta

The Halfmoon Betta has a half-circle tail, which is where it gets its name. It is the result of selective breeding, which is why you won’t find it anywhere in the wild. It grows up to 2.5 inches and only requires a one fourth gallon size tank, though bigger is always better. The blue, black and yellow coloration is quite pleasant to look at.

9. Half Sun Betta

Half Sun Betta

The Half Sun Betta is completely orange and is also the result of selective breeding. This fish was created from the Crown Tail and Half Moon Bettas. It definitely looks similar to the Halfmoon Betta, at least in terms of its spread.

10. Elephant Ear Betta

Elephant Ear Betta

The Elephant Ear Betta has a one-of-a-kind shape and unique coloration that is truly stunning. It gets its name from the unique shape of its pectoral fins, which look like an elephant eat. These fish aren’t nearly as bright and vibrant in the wild. The captive Elephant Eat Bettas are often red, yellow, blue and even turquoise.

11. Spade Tail Betta

The Spade Tail Betta looks a lot like the round tail variety, except it has a pointed caudal fin. This fish is a subtle beauty with its muted blue, yellow and white coloration. There is also a little black around the face. It gets its name from the shape of its tail, which looks like a spade.
